Turning Over the Tables on Skepticism

8/18/2014

By: Scott Shifferd, Jr.
“Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one” (Cl 4.5-6).

Moral Skepticism
  • “People should decide for themselves what is right and wrong.”
Response:
  • “What is your standard for right and wrong?”
  • “Is the only moral logic yours & those you agree with?”
  • “What is it called when one's righteousness comes from oneself?”

Scientific Skepticism
  • “The natural world is all that there is.”
Response:
  • “How can you believe that the Universe was created from nothing?”
  • “Where does new information come for new species & genera?”
  • “How does genetic information come from primordial soup?”

Biblical Skepticism
  • “The Bible was written by men.”
Response:
  • “Is it fair to reinterpret a book to reject it?”
  • “Do you believe innocent until proven guilty?”
  • “Is an innocent person guilty when antagonists stack evidence against him?”

Consequential Skepticism
  • “Basically good people go to heaven.”
Response:
  • “What are the limits on getting into heaven?”
  • “What is your standard for goodness?”
  • “If good people go to heaven, then who needs Jesus?”

Jesus said,
“My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wills to do His will, he will know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him” (Jn 7.16-18).
