By: Undre Griggs, Jr When looking at the law of the Old Testament, I am sometimes overwhelmed by all the laws the Israelites had to live under to remain holy. Even with all the burnt offerings, tithes, and food restrictions, the sins of the Jews were not forgiven. The best their imperfect sacrifices could produce was pushing their sins forward one more year. In the New Covenant, Christians are fortunate to have the perfect sacrifice. As a result, we are able to have our sins forgiven (completely removed). Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV): But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. An additional benefit of being under the New Covenant is the gift of the Holy Spirit. Once you receive the Holy Spirit through baptism, you commit to living a different life. Scripture says we put to death our old fruits of the earth (“fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry”) when we take on the life of becoming a Christian. 1 Timothy 1:9-10 (ESV): understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, When you live the life of a Christian and exhibit the fruits of the Spirit in your daily interactions, you have overcome the law. The law is not to condemn the acts of the righteous, but to highlight the misdeeds of the “lawless and disobedient”. When Paul says, “against such things there is no law”, he is letting us know we can free ourselves from the law’s punishment. We may not always think of living within the confines of certain rules as freedom, but that is because some laws of the world are unjust and unreasonable. However, the law of God is holy and righteous. So by living within the commandments of God, you will live a peaceful and content life. Among the many differences between God and man, God’s desire is for all to be saved. Everything He has done and will continue to do is to provide an opportunity for the lost to find their way back home. It is in our best interest to listen and obey the will of God. Who would not want to live a life filled with, “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control”? How many times has your life improved because you exhibited one of these traits in a bad situation? We all want love, joy, and peace from our live, but do we give, “patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness”, and “self-control”? All of the gifts of Holy Spirit will improve our quality of life. Some will come in the way we are treated by others, but others will come as a result of how we treat others. By focusing on God and walking the path of righteousness, we will continue to be free of the law and receive the many blessings that come as a result.
By: Undre Griggs, Jr Giving your life to Jesus Christ through baptism is necessary to receive the blessing of eternal life. Only after baptism for the remission of sin will you receive the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38 (ESV): And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. While we understand the blessing of eternal life, we sometimes overlook the blessings of the Holy Spirit here on earth. Besides assisting us with our prayers to Father God, the Holy Spirit produces blessing we would spend an inheritance to secure. Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV): But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Love: John 13:34-35 (ESV): A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Joy and Peace: Romans 15:13 (ESV): May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Gentleness and Self Control: Titus 1:8 (ESV): But hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. Kindness and Patience: 2 Timothy 2:24 (ESV): And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, Goodness and Faithfulness: Proverbs 3:3 (ESV): Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. You will notice obedience to God is the manner in which the Holy Spirit provides the gifts. You cannot be baptized, do nothing to grow your faith, and expect the Holy Spirit to miraculously provide these blessing to you. You have to be diligent in your faith and work to grow it (Revelations 2:10). After baptism; stay in constant prayer, meditating on what is good and pure, reading your Bible daily, and the fruits of the Spirit will be yours.
by Undre Griggs, Jr We have all been there at some point in our lives. We are faced with a decision and for one reason or another; we don’t make a judgment. We start to think, rethink, and think some more and as a result, nothing happens. God is there to help us make decisions. God wants us to be decisive, confident, and reliant upon Him. He is there for us when we are in need and there is not a question God does not know the answer to. Ask God for guidance in your decision-making. Proverbs 3:5-6, NKJV: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Be humble. Psalm 25:9, NKJV: “The humble He guides in justice, and the humble He teaches His way.” When God guides your path, He will stay with you. Psalm 37:23, NKJV: “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand.” Plan for the task at hand. Luke 14:28-30, NKJV: “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it— lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’?" Make sure you have the facts and hear both sides of the matter. Proverbs 18:17, NIV: "In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right, until someone comes forward and cross-examines." Always pray. Luke 6:12-13, NIV: "One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:"
