How can Christians have joy in the face of persecution? While in prison, the apostle Paul prioritized encouraging Christians. Instead of telling Christians avoid persecution, Paul warned of false teachers. He exhorted the Philippian Christians to rejoice in the Lord, and in the next sentence, he warned of look out for the dogs and evildoers who mutilate the flesh. With tears, the apostle described the enemies of the cross of Christ as “Their end is destruction, their god is their belly.” Paul taught these Christians to avoid the enemies’ earthly pursuits and choose to know Christ. Therefore, the apostle taught that a Christian must count all things as loss to gain Christ and know the power of His resurrection. This lesson considers how Christians must look forward to better things.

What does Christian joy look like? This is not always what the world may expect. Joy with Christian humility appears as a contradiction to the world. Philippians 2 demonstrates that in Jesus Christ, Christians need not fear opponents of the faith. However, in the pursuit of joy, Christians will suffer for Christ’s sake. Jesus demonstrated a path to joy and a standard for Christian unity that includes self-sacrificial humility. This study will take a close look at this “paradox” and the example of Jesus Christ.

Sharing appears to come natural to children. From a Christian home, children have a Gospel-tented perspective of the world. For them, sharing Jesus and His love is obvious and organic. Sharing the Gospel means more than evangelism. Giving the Gospel includes giving to the church’s eternal mission. The church’s eternal purpose is to proclaim the excellencies of God and make disciples of all the nations baptizing them and teaching them all that Christ commanded (Matt 28:19–20; Eph 3:9–10; 1 Pet 2:9). In Philippians 1, the apostle Paul revealed that giving to mission works is a participation in the Gospel, and that such fellowship brings great joy (Phil 1:3–7). How can Christians further advance the Gospel and increase their joy? Give.

Her cousin adopted her as his own daughter when her parents died. She would grow to become a beautiful woman who would become the queen of the empire that ruled the world. With her power came the opportunity to save her people by risking her life. Her adoptive father, Mordecai, expressed to Queen Esther, “And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esth 4:12b). Esther demonstrated qualities that every Christian, man or woman, should desire to represent Jesus Christ. What were those qualities?
